Electrifying Mobile Equipment Reduces Emissions and Operating Costs

SunSource's conversion of this rail crane to a serial hybrid electric system allows the operator to increase efficiency by 75 percent and reduce CO2 emmisions by 750 metric tons annually.

SunSource is successful in helping our OEM customers reduce emissions and overall machine operating costs through our electrification solutions. These applications can range from road construction equipment and excavators to cranes and workboats. In most cases, these new, energy-efficient systems replace diesel fuel systems, delivering a significant boost in efficiency and reducing Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, noise pollution, and overall maintenance.

For example, we recently worked with a mobile crane manufacturer to convert its diesel-powered rail crane to a serial hybrid electric system to improve efficiency and maintain productivity – all with a smaller engine. We were able to deliver a solution that downsized the diesel engine 88 horsepower by utilizing six electric motors with a 72kWh battery for all crane functions. Systems like these recapture and reuse energy from various machine operations, such as lowering a crane’s electric hoist. Another benefit of electrification is the increased service life of the crane due to the optimum engine loading designed into the system.

This specific application provided our customer with:

  • A 75 Percent Efficiency Improvement
  • $35K in Fuel Reduction Annually
  • 750 Metric Tons CO2/year Eliminated at the Rail Site – equivalent to the CO2e emissions from ~156 gasoline-powered passenger cars being driven for one year.
